State will supply red rice to Kerala
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has given an assurance to supply 10,000 tonnes of red rice to Kerala in the current month and agreed to consider increasing it from next month, according to Kerala’s Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran. Mr. Divakaran told newsmen here on Saturday that Tamil Nadu Food Minister Velu, had told him that he had to get the consent of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi before taking a final decision.
Mr. Divakaran said he would be coming to Chennai again to meet Mr. Karunanidhi.
Mr. Divakaran said Kerala was facing an acute shortage of rice and wheat as the Centre had reduced its monthly quota by one lakh tonnes and 75,000 tonnes. This had led to reduction in rice and wheat supply through the public distribution system.
The State Government was also in touch with Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh Governments to procure rice.
Milk shortage
Mr. Divakaran said Kerala was also facing milk shortage after Tamil Nadu cut down its supply by one lakh litres a day.
During his meeting with Animal Husbandry Minister P.Geetha Jeevan and Dairy Development Minister U.Mathivanan, they agreed to restore the supply within a few days.
