Raghavendran, Senthil share the spoils as Parry’s overwhelms Eagles

Chennai: Off-spinner N. Raghavendran and left-arm spinner S. Senthil Kumar came up with ten-wicket match hauls as Parry’s defeated Eagles by 138 runs at the Murugappa-TI Cycles ground on the third day of the seventh round in the TNCA first division league here on Saturday.

A valuable 161 (211b, 23x3, 2x6) by Amit Pathak saved the match for IOB against Indian Bank at the MRF-Pachaiyappa’s ground. Trailing by 204 and beginning the day at 29 for two, IOB was dismissed for 294 late on day three, leaving Indian Bank with little time to force a win.

Grand Slam held on to a draw against Globe Trotters at the ICL-Guru Nanak ground, progressing to 256 for six in its second innings when play concluded. Trotters was docked a point for slow over rate.

Vijay gains lead

With left-arm spinner Sreekumar Nair returning a five-wicket haul, Vijay dismissed India Pistons for 266 to gain the first innings lead at the CPT-IP ground. For the host, Vikram Mani made 88 (159b, 14x4) and S. Lakshmi Kumar contributing 64 (162b, 4x4, 3x6).

At the IIT-Chemplast ground, Aruna — with Noorul-Riaz (62, 227b, 6x4) and Aaditya Ganesh (63, 165b, 11x4) contributing usefully — salvaged a draw against Jolly Rovers. The visitor finished at 216 for five.

Sadagopan Ramesh scored 80 (115b, 4x4, 3x6) at MAC as Young Stars denied Alwarpet an outright win, progressing to 234 for six in its second innings.

Ashwin shines

M. Ashwin (four for 18) enabled Santhome ‘A’ script a 10-wicket win over Vidya Mandir ‘A’ in a quarterfinal league match of the TNCA-Boost city schools under-17 cricket tournament for C. Ramaswamy Trophy held recently.

In another contest, Rochin’s four for 16 helped St. Patrick’s overcome DAV by six wickets.

St. Bede’s defeated Santhome HSS by 48 runs in the final of the Goms city invitation inter-school cricket tournament recently.

Special awards: Player of the series: B. Inderjith (St. Bede’s); Best batsman: Ganga Sridhar Raju (Santhome); Best bowler: Selva (Santhome); Promising youngster: Kaushik U. Ram (Chettinad Vidyashram).

Freedom BC posts win

Freedom BC defeated Vigneshwara BC 61-47 on the opening day of the All-Star Trophy basketball tournament at Corporation ground, Venkatnarayana Road, on Saturday.

Men: Freedom BC 61 (Murugesh 20, Sathish 16, Logeshraja 10, Esha 10) bt Vigneshwara BC 47 (Ranjith 19, Ragav 12, Rohit 10).

Johnny pips Sunder

Qualifying matches of the T.S. Santhanam memorial veteran’s tennis tournament began on Saturday.

Six plus 55 and 15 plus 45 singles matches were conducted. In one of the exciting plus 45 first round qualifying matches, Johnny of Andhra Pradesh edged out C.S. Sunder (Tamil Nadu) 9-6.

Twenty meet marks set

Twenty new meet records — 12 by boys and eight by girls — were created on the second and penultimate day of the Tamil Nadu short-course age-group swimming championship at the SDAT-Dolphin Academy, Mogappair West, on Saturday. Twenty-four meet records were made on Friday.
