NEW DELHI: A 52-year-old proclaimed offender wanted in connection with several cases of murder, dacoity, attempt to murder and extortion has been arrested by the East Delhi police. The police received secret information that alleged dacoit and contract killer Saleem alias Shafifuddin would come to meet his gang member at Khureji. Acting on the information, the police laid a trap on Pushta Road. Saleem was arrested before he could whip out his loaded country-made pistol, the police said. A case under the Arms Act has been registered at the Shakarpur police station. Saleem carries a cash reward of Rs.25,000. During interrogation, Saleem purportedly confessed to his involvement in 37 criminal cases. He was first arrested in connection with a dacoity in 1982 and claimed to have killed over a hundred people including his accomplice and informers, the police said. He is said to be heading a 25-member gang involved in several cases of dacoity, contract killing and extortion. According to the police, Saleem had recently shifted his base to the Capital as police teams from several States had been hunting for him. He was planning to widen his base in Delhi. His brother Jamruddin alias Pagla is also wanted in over a dozen cases of dacoity and murder in Delhi, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
