This is with reference to the report ‘Crackdown on sub-standard tea will continue’ (January 9). The best advertisement for any product is the quality of that product. Misleading marketing methods may bring in some short-term benefits; but if the quality is sub-standard, the consumer will opt for better products. The crackdown by the Tea Board on sub-standard and adulterated tea will definitely have the desired effect soon. These people (adulterers) are, in fact, undermining the possibility of the Nilgiris tea industry making its way to the international market. P.U. Krishnan, Udhgamandalam. Wither developmentThere have been demands for connecting roads to Ooty in addition to the Kotagiri and Kallar routes since in the monsoon season roads get blocked either owing to landslide or falling of boulders/trees etc. But we forget that Ooty has to be Ooty, a hill station and not Delhi or Calcutta and Chennai – a capital city or a business hub. Forest cover is the casualty in the execution of any new road project and in construction as it will denude trees, loosen the natural embankment and become an epicentre for erosion during successive monsoon. We will gift flat green hills as barren grounds to the future generations. Therefore any decision on this should be well-deliberated. We should also bear in the mind that we are not able to work even with the existing road and any addition will be only potholes. Let us not invite disaster in the name of development. Ramanuj Prasad, Udhagamandalam. No progressSalem Division of the railways was established after a lot of efforts. But this has not brought much progress for Coimbatore. Nagercoil Daily Express, announced in the Railway Budget, has not been introduced. There is no progress in the Irugur-Coimbatore North doubling work. No new train has been introduced from Coimbatore to Bangalore. It was expected that the Intercity Express would be reverted to the old schedule i.e. originating from Coimbatore. But its extension up to Ernakulam seems to be permanent. Coimbatore-Erode passenger train should have more frequency. Sankar. S, Coimbatore. Walkers’ problemsHealth conscious people who walk regularly have swelled considerably in recent times. Places like the pathway in Race Course, the Forest College campus, Bharathi Park etc. are some of the most preferred spots of the regular walkers. After authorities banned the walkers’ entry into the Government College of Technology campus following the bomb blast in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a few years ago, those from Saibaba Mission, K.K. Pudur and other nearby areas walk the pathway in Bharathi Park. Corporation authorities keep the park open every day from 4.30 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, there is a problem causing much concern. Lights provided in the middle of the park are inadequate to illuminate the pathway. It remains fairly dark till day-break and after sunset. The Corporation should look into the matter and arrange for proper illumination. K.D.Viswanaathan, Coimbatore. Jan Shatabdi ExpressCoimbatore-Kumbakonam Jan Shatabdi Express provides a good connectivity between the Delta districts and the western districts of Tamil Nadu. Most of the time, this train reaches Tiruchirappalli junction much ahead of the scheduled time. This train should be extended to Mayiladuturai and this will benefit passengers from Chidambaram and Mayiladuturai. Also, there is a paddy research station at Aduturai which comes under the administration of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. If the train halts at Aduturai, it will help in linking these two centres. Ravi S, Coimbatore. Property TaxWith the introduction of the unit area system of Property Tax in Delhi since 2004 the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is offering a 30 per cent rebate in the gross property tax to citizens above 60. In the context of the Coimbatore Corporation authorities exploring ways to make the budget a vision statement for the City, the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation also may follow the Delhi example in the ensuing budget.
M.K. Nagaratnam, Coimbatore. Tirupur’s needsTirupur’s residents feel elated and proud that the knitwear town has been elevated as a Corporation and has become the headquarters of a district to be merged with it. Now Tirupur railway station should be made a railway junction. The proposal in the thirties to link Mysore and Palani with a rail line via Tirupur, which has been in cold storage, should be revived considering that lakhs of people visit the town. Scheme for water supply from Bhavani should be expedited. A master plan should be drawn up for provision of infrastructure to make it a city worth living in. M.R. Pillai, Coimbatore.
