Smooth ride ahead: The damaged portion of Salem-Yercaud Ghat Road. SALEM: Works taken up to repair a damaged portion on Yercaud Ghat Road are nearing completion. A portion of the road near the third hairpin bend got damaged during heavy rain in the hill resort in September last year. This had affected the movement of heavy vehicles for a few days. State Highways workers removed the rocks near the hairpin bend and allowed the movement of heavy vehicles. The State Government had allotted a sum of Rs. 20.6 lakh to repair the damaged portion and the works began in the last week of September. Officials said that the department had completed the construction of a retaining wall to a height of 9 metres to prevent further landslips in the area. A few works such as tar topping of the damaged portion and elimination of a curve were yet to be taken up. These works would be completed within February, officials said. Meanwhile, road users pointed out that several stretches on Ghat road, which was re-laid recently, got damaged quickly due to absence of storm water drains on both sides of it. They also urged transport officials to prevent the movement of overloaded vehicles on Ghat Road, which was also a reason for the damage.
