AISF wants pre-matric girls’ hostels in all hoblis

Special Correspondent

Those from villages can’t afford to travel to school everyday

Increase in mess allowance for inmates of pre-and post-matric hostels demanded

Funds sought for constructing buildings for existing hostels

GULBARGA: The All India Students’ Federation (AISF) on Sunday demanded that the State Government establish pre-matric hostels in all hoblis, exclusively for girls, and increase the mess allowance for inmates of pre-matric hostels from Rs. 450 to Rs. 750 and post-matric hostels from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000.

President of the district unit of the AISF Mallikarjun Hangargi and treasurer Rajendra Rajwal told presspersons here that since there were no pre-matric hostels at the hobli level, girl students coming from remote villages were not in a position to continue their studies and had to drop out as they could not afford to travel daily to their schools from their villages.

Mr. Hangargi said that the mess allowance being paid to inmates of post-and pre-matric hostels in the State was low when compared to the cost of foodgrains, oil and vegetables.

Therefore, the allowance should be increased.

He said pre-and post-matric hostels in the district were being housed in small buildings which did not have sufficient space to accommodate the inmates.

The government should release funds to construct buildings for these hostels, he added.

Mr. Hangargi said that the existing hostels lacked basic amenities and urged the government to take immediate steps to provide basic amenities, including libraries, apart from sports equipment and monthly medical check-ups for inmates.

Separate hostels for boys and girls pursuing professional courses should be established at all taluk headquarters, he said.

He said that AISF would be holding a district-level Hostel Inmates’ Conference at the Kannada Bhavan on January 23 to discuss the matter.
