Five acres of land identified at Karnangeri

ASI serves notices to vacate the offices at the Fort

Rs. 16-crore estimate submitted to the Government

Madikeri: The State Government has given the green signal for the construction of the office complexes pertaining to the Kodagu district administration and the zilla panchayat in the same building at Karnangeri, near here, according to information gathered by The Hindu.

Currently, the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Assistant Commissioner’s office and all other offices under the district administration function from the Fort here. Fort is a monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Almost all offices of the zilla panchayat also function from the Fort.

The Government nod came at a high-level meeting held in Bangalore recently concerning the departments of Revenue and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Deputy Secretary of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Zulfiqarulla said. He said the ASI had served several notices on the district administration and the zilla panchayat to vacate the offices at the Fort in order to conserve the monument. But it had been delayed for various reasons, including non-availability of a proper office complex.

Following this, the district administration had identified five acres of land at Karnangeri, near here. An estimate involving a sum of Rs. 16 crore was submitted to the State Government, of which Rs. 4 crore was released by the Government to the Kodagu Deputy Commissioner.

On the other hand, the zilla panchayat had taken up construction of its own office complex near the Sudarshan Circle here recently. Levelling work of the site had been completed. The Government had sanctioned Rs. 2 crore for the purpose and Rs. 60 lakh was released to the zilla panchayat. But, for various reasons, the works were impeded. And, there was a plan to return the amount to the Government. Constructing the offices of the district administration and zilla pcnahayat on the same premises would be of great advantage to the people.

The issue of construction of zilla pcnahayat offices would be placed before the Finance Standing Committee of the panchayat soon, he added.
