“Politicians responsible for rise in naxalism”

Youth join the cadre due to frustration: Mayawati

Says, states that have deprived the poor of their rights are witnessing such activities

“If BSP comes to power, it will ensure that

the root cause of violence is addressed”

Bhubaneswar: Expressing grave concern over the spurt in naxalite violence in various parts of the country, BSP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday blamed politicians who were at the helm of affairs for a long time for it.

Kicking off her party’s campaign here for the next Lok Sabha elections due next year, Ms. Mayawati said naxalite violence continued to be a major problem for the last 15-20 years. This was because more and more people were joining the naxalite cadre thus strengthening their outfits, she said.

“People, mainly youths are joining the naxal cadre out of frustration and other compulsions,” she claimed adding no one was joining the cadre on his own to become a naxalite or a terrorist.

“Politicians and parties in states and at the Centre are responsible for the growth of naxal menace.” Since the state governments ignore the people living in forests and remote areas, the people support naxalites to get their benefits. “The state governments which have deprived the poor people of their genuine rights are witnessing naxalite activities,” she said.

The Chief Minister also blamed the Centre for rise in terrorism in some border states. “Since the Centre is unable to protect international borders, terrorists from neighbouring countries sneak in,” she said. Ms. Mayawati said since successive governments at the Centre adopted economic policies to benefit capitalists and not the poor, naxalisim and terrorism had been growing.

“If BSP comes to power, it will ensure that the root cause of violence is addressed properly in order to check the twin problems.” — PTI
