Andhra Pradesh
The services of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) under the leadership of their Director-General are praiseworthy in detecting more cases of assets disproportionate to the income of officials. Immediate departmental action against corrupt employees surely gives encouragement to the ACB. The government should also take steps to display ‘do not offer bribe’ boards in all government offices. The ACB should be given a free hand and ACB officials should be given incentives whenever they unearth disproportionate assets. It is also the need of the hour to recruit officials into the ACB for its more effective functioning. B.V. Subrahmanya Sastry Bapatla, Guntur district Uphold dignity of Bharat Ratna It is deplorable to note that the country’s highest valuable award ‘Bharat Ratna’ has been dragged to the streets by our political leaders. Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani wrote a letter to the Prime Minister advising him to confer the highest award on A.B. Vajpayee. Taking a cue from Mr. Advani, leaders like Mayavathi came out with similar demands. In this context, one should keep in mind that respect should be commanded, not demanded. There are universally accepted procedures and well-reasoned committees to select persons for the award. Political leaders are advised to keep quite and uphold the dignity of the award. Addanki Srinivasa Rao Ongole, Prakasam district Basmati rice for prasadamsThe decision of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to use Basmati rice in the preparation of the famous ‘prasadam’ needs to be re-looked at. Already, there are apprehensions that Basmati would take away the distinct and unique flavour in prasadams like ‘pulihora’ used traditionally since a very long time. Besides, the Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham also urged the State Government and the TTD to use local rice varieties such as super fine ‘samba masoori’ and ‘sona masoori’, which are addressing the local needs and are being exported. I request the TTD to review its decision on Basmati rice. K. Sujatha Rao Kavali, Nellore district A national festivalIt gives me great joy to note that the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda is being observed as National Youth Day. It will be more delightful if his birth anniversary is celebrated as national festival by all educational institutions, the State and Central Government offices. The youth in the present age have to be taught the values preached and practiced by Swami Vivekananda. It is the desire of Vivekananda to build a strong nation and involve youth in the progress of the country. It causes me deep agony that the present movies and the modern means of communication are spoiling the minds of the youth. M. Blessing Moses Polavaram, WG district
