Single stretch of road linking Pudukottai with Raangiyam to be widened

Fallout: Widening of road on Pudukottai–Narchandupatti sector in progress has resulted in uprooting of a number of trees.
PUDUKOTTAI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up the widening of a stretch of the road linking Pudukottai with Raangiyam village in the district.
The road in the interior part of the district forms a vital link for several villages including Valayapatti, Panayapatti, Kuzhipirai and Ponnamaravathy. The highway connects these villages with Pudukottai. A large number of students from villages reach colleges in and around Pudukottai by buses.
The existing single road for a stretch of about 15 km poses a danger to the pedestrians and two-wheelers. The problem becomes serious beyond Narchandupatti, where the road is dotted with seasoned trees on either sides of the highway, providing little space for the heavy vehicle drivers to give way for oncoming vehicles. The work on widening the road to 7 metres from its present 3.75 metres has been taken up at an outlay of Rs.4.40 crore under the Central Road Fund sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Surface Transport, official sources said here on Sunday.
The use of heavy machinery for spreading the earth close to the trees and levelling it had resulted in uprooting of a few trees on the stretch. However, all the trees would be felled after obtaining due permission from the Revenue Department, sources said. The proceeds from the auctioning of the trees would be deposited with the Revenue Department.
