Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: National executive committee member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) V. Dhananjayakumar on Sunday said it was a good development that his party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) were coming closer, though there was no alliance between them. Shortly after addressing BJP functionaries and activists at the headquarters of the Puducherry unit of the party, he told reporters that the AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa had evinced interest in supporting the causes espoused by the BJP such as “Ramar Sethu,” and opposition to “pampering the minorities” by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government. “I see a [political] future for the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and it will definitely have an impact in Puducherry also,” he said. The BJP’s national leadership would take a decision on electoral ties at the appropriate time, he said. When asked about the report that the Janata Dal (Secular) faction led by M.P.Prakash was all set to join the Congress in Karnataka, Mr.Dhananjayakumar said the BJP did not nurture any big hope that the group would come into its fold. Describing Mr.Prakash as a senior political leader, he said, “no doubt we also like to have him with us but it is up to him to take a decision.” He flayed the Puducherry Government for not issuing necessary notification on devolution of powers to the local bodies to make them function effectively, though civic elections were held after 32 years. The BJP had already taken it up with the Centre, he said. AutonomyThough the Centre had shelved the decision to confer autonomy on the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), the BJP would continue to oppose the move till it was abandoned, Mr. Dhananjayakumar said. Differences among the functionaries of the party unit in Puducherry had been sorted out through discussions, he said.
