DSIIDC to undertake civic work in illegal colonies

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation has now branched into roles that were traditionally reserved for civic agencies. Involved primarily in building and maintaining industrial estates and selling liquor in the Capital, the DSIIDC will now provide civic infrastructure in 171 unauthorised colonies.

In a statement on Sunday, DSIIDC Managing Director Manoj Parida said: “Now we have been entrusted with the task of developing infrastructure because our organisation is not plagued by the usual obstacles and clearance requirements. This ensures that work is completed in a time-bound manner. Consequentially, a lot of work of the Public Works Department has come to us.”

The new responsibilities include building roads, drains and other related infrastructure in 171 colonies where work has either started or is slated to start anytime now. “The Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department are the other agencies involved.”

According to Mr. Parida, the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme was another “big social responsibility” that the organisation had been entrusted with by the Delhi Government. “We will be building two lakh houses for the weaker sections of society and the work has already started. We expect to build over 50,000 houses by the end of this year as the construction is progressing at a fair clip.” Informing about the DSIIDC’s original work-profile involving liquor outlets, Mr. Parida said: “Several new steps have already been taken. These include modernising and renovating the shops, computerisation and better stock management.”
