Work to be completed in eight months: Official

MADURAI: Renovation works on the towers of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here, part of the ongoing works for kumbabishekam conducted every 12 years, began on Sunday.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Karumuttu T. Kannan, presided over the pujas, a continuation of ‘Balalayam’ created last October marking the commencement of renovation works, performed along with other trustee members including Rukumani Palanivel Rajan and Joint Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department K. Rajanayagam.

In this phase, the four ‘Rajagopurams’ (North, East, West and South towers), ‘thanga vimanam’ and Ainthunilai Mukuruni Vinayakar Gopuram would be completely renovated.

While the works on East tower alone would cost Rs.29 lakh, around Rs.25 lakh would be spent on the remaining towers. “Donors have come forward to bear the costs for all the towers,” Joint Commissioner, HR and CE Department and Executive Officer of the temple, B. Raja, said. He added that the works would take around eight months to be completed.

Each and every compartment in the internal parts of the towers would be cleaned and wherever necessary patch works would be done. If the wood in any of the towers were found to be in a dilapidated condition, it would be replaced with.

“The figures in the temple towers, which are a speciality of this city, will be cleaned thoroughly and damages attended to. Photographs will be taken before the commencement of any work. The entire process will be well documented,” he said.

Lightning conductor

The temple authorities have also planned to install a lightning conductor in the north tower at a total cost of around Rs.2 lakh. It would have a radius of 10 km. The lightning conductor, which would be imported from France, would cover the entire temple premises and also the surroundings areas. The donor for North Tower had agreed to bear its cost also, said Mr. Raja.

Construction works would be undertaken to ensure that no rain water stagnated as it resulted in growth of weeds.
