PALAKKAD: G. Bakthavathsalam, chairman of K.G. Hospital, Coimbatore, has said that a silent but deadly epidemic of heart disease is raging in the country. He was speaking at a health mela here on Sunday. Dr. Bakthavathsalam said it was estimated that at least one out of 10 Indians suffers from heart disease. He said heart attacks struck many Indians at a relatively young age (40 to 60 years). Some even suffered their first attack when they were just 35 or even 25. Among Indians, heart disease tended to be severe, malignant and diffuse, making it hard to treat with bypass surgery or angioplasty. Until recently, heart disease was considered a man’s disease. However, heart disease rates among Indian men and women were virtually identical, he said.
