Concrete steps: P. Chidambaram, Union Finance Minister, laying the foundation stone for the artisans’ institute at Managiri near Karaikudi on Sunday.
KARAIKUDI: The Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, laid the foundation stone for constructing a permanent building with hostel facility for the Artisans’ Training Institute, promoted by Canara Bank, at Sankarapuram near here on Sunday.
The construction work at a cost of Rs.2 crore will be completed in 12 months.
Addressing the function, Mr. Chidambaram said that neither the Government nor the private sector could give employment opportunities to all.
Artisans do not depend on others for jobs, but always prefer to remain independent.
“Creativity will not flourish when people are working under others,” he added.
On the on-going banking activity which was working towards economically empowering the poor, Mr. Chidambaram said “All these attempts are being made to sow the seeds of confidence that individuals will have a better tomorrow and the country will become a super power soon,” he added.
The training institute that was started two years back was imparting training to artisans to work on stone, metal and wood.
The Chairman and Managing Director of Canara Bank, M.B.N. Rao, said that the bank had already doubled the lending to agriculture sector from Rs.4,000 crore to Rs.9,000 crore.
This would go up to Rs.11,000 crore next year, he added. The bank had provided financial assistance to 1.50 lakh self-help groups in order to empower women and distributed educational loan to 1.04 lakh students.
The Karaikudi MLA, N. Sundaram, was present.
