CPI (M) warns of protests

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday reiterated its opposition to any move to increase prices of petroleum products and warned that it would launch a nationwide protest if the government went ahead with a hike.

“We have been saying that there should be no increase in fuel prices. The people are already suffering due to tremendous rise in prices. There has been an enormous increase in the price of rice. At this stage, we do not want more burden to be added,” CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here.

If there was an increase in prices of petroleum products, there would be severe protests all over the country. “We are talking to all our friends, all other political parties to protest,” he said.

The Left parties had been urging the government to review and revise the tax structure on petro-products.
