Surveillance up in other States

NEW DELHI: The West Bengal Government on Saturday sent 79 more samples to the High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory at Bhopal.

As a precautionary measure, the Centre has increased surveillance in Jharkhand, Orissa, Bihar and the north-eastern States.

Fresh samples were lifted from Howrah, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Kolkata, Burdwan, Bankura, Nadia, Malda, Pashim Midnapore and Birbhum districts, according to the Department of Animal Husbandry here.

The samples from Bankura have tested positive for bird flu as also additional ones sent from Nadia, Birbhum and Murshidabad.

As per the latest information received here, 98,254 poultry birds have died in Birbhum, Dakshin Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Nadia, South 24 Parganas, Burdwan and Bankura districts. More than 1.21 lakh poultry birds have been culled and tonnes of eggs and feed destroyed.

On Saturday, 60 Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) carried out operations (58 teams for culling and 2 for surveillance) in Birbhum district; 33 teams were deployed in Dakshin Dinajpur district and 16 in Murshidabad for culling.
