COLOMBO: At least 30 cadres of the LTTE and a soldier of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) were killed and another soldier was reported missing as heavy clashes erupted between the army and the LTTE on the Mannar, Vavuniya and Welioya battlefronts on Sunday, the military said here. In a statement, the Defence Ministry claimed that on the Mannar front, troops advanced further into the Pallikuli area and “dislodged terrorists’ fortified positions”. It said infantrymen, after a heavy battle, captured the trench defence manned by LTTE terrorists and during the subsequent search, troops found two bodies of LTTE female cadres along with two T-56 rifles. The Ministry said on the Vavuniya front, troops confronted the LTTE at two separate incidents and killed four cadres. On the Welioya front, troops clashed with a group of LTTE cadres, killing two of them. One soldier went on missing and one suffered injuries in the clash. In another development, President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday visited the home of two brothers killed in the recent LTTE massacre of civilians at Thanamalvila in Uva province to pay respects to them and to all victims of the attack. An official statement said that addressing the people present, Mr. Rajapaksa called for continued vigilance from the people against terrorists, even as the government took all steps to combat the LTTE.
