Devakottai CC emerges champion

Karaikudi: Devakottai CC beat Syed Ammal Engineering College (Ramanathapuram) 2-0 via bowl-out to win the title, after the teams were tied in the final of the 25th annual CECRI Twenty20 cricket tournament here on Sunday.

Devakottai CC bagged a cash prize of Rs.15000, while Syed Ammal Engineering College got Rs.10000.

The scores (final): Devakottai 143 in 19.2 overs (Manivannan four for 30) tied with Syed Ammal Engg. 143 for nine in 20 overs (Devakottai won 2-0 on bowl-out).

Semifinals: Devakottai 135 for eight in 20 overs (Selvaganapathy 29) bt St. Peter’s (Kodaikanal) 129 for nine in 20 overs (Abdur Rahim 48, Babu three for 13); Syed Ammal 158 for seven in 20 overs (Abbas Ali 74, G. Ramachandran four for 34) bt Aruna Sports 147 for eight in 20 overs (Gokula Krishnan three for 32).

Coimbatore wins

Coimbatore lifted the ICL Mahaveer Chand memorial trophy defeating Thiruvallur by nine wickets in the final of the inter-district (under-13) cricket tournament at Sankarnagar on Sunday.

The scores: Thiruvallur 58 in 27.3 overs (Vignesh Karthik three for eight, Karthick three for 11) lost to Coimbatore 59 for one in 8.5 overs (Hari Nishanth 31).

Arul bags five

A fine spell by medium-pacer Arul (five for 34) helped Crescent CC defeat Pykara CC by 13 runs in the Canara Bank-MDCA first division ‘B’ zone league at Madurai on Sunday.

The scores: Crescent 176 in 45.2 overs (Muthu 41) bt Pykara 163 in 36.1 overs (Vinoth 65, Rajasekar 49, Arul five for 34); Eleven Bullets 118 in 30.2 overs lost to Oliva 122 for five in 26.2 overs (Mohan 40).

It’s IB vs. S. Rly.

Indian Bank (IB) and Southern Railway (S. Rly.), both from Chennai, will clash for the title in men’s section in the Ayira Vaisya Basketball Club State-level basketball tournament at Paramakudi. Both the teams registered their second win in the semifinal round-robin league on Saturday.

Similarly, Chennai Nationals Basketball Club and SRM Rising Star Basketball Club, Chennai will contest for the title in women’s section with two wins each in the four-team league.

The results (league): Men: Southern Railway 74 (Saravanarajan 31, Bernard 10) bt Loyola College, Chennai 60 (Nibin 20, Prem 12); Indian Bank 79 (Lokesh Yadav 14, Bhuvaneswaran 11) bt Armed Police 35 (Kottai 11, Rajendran 10).

Sivasenthil, Muneeswaran sizzle

K. Sivasenthil of DYFI Sports Club and G. Muneeswaran of Madura College won two golds each in athletics in the Madurai District Pongal Sports and games meet organised by Madurai unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu at MGR Race Course stadium on Friday.
