Coimbatore
Salem Division of the railways was established after a lot of efforts. But this has not brought much progress for Coimbatore. Nagercoil Daily Express, announced in the Railway Budget, has not been introduced. There is no progress in the Irugur-Coimbatore North doubling work. No new train has been introduced from Coimbatore to Bangalore. It was expected that the Intercity Express would be reverted to the old schedule i.e. originating from Coimbatore. But its extension up to Ernakulam seems to be permanent. Coimbatore-Erode passenger train should have more frequency. Sankar. S, Gandhipuram. Walkers’ problems galoreHealth conscious people who walk regularly have swelled considerably in recent times. Places like the pathway in Race Course, the Forest College campus, Bharathi Park etc. are some of the most preferred spots of the regular walkers. After authorities banned the walkers’ entry into the Government College of Technology campus following the bomb blast in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a few years ago, those from Saibaba Mission, K.K. Pudur and other nearby areas walk the pathway in Bharathi Park. Corporation authorities keep the park open every day from 4.30 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, there is a problem causing much concern. Lights provided in the middle of the park are inadequate to illuminate the pathway. It remains fairly dark till day-break and after sunset. The Corporation should look into the matter and arrange for proper illumination. K.D.Viswanaathan, Thadagam Road. Timing of Jan Shatabdi ExpressCoimbatore-Kumbakonam Jan Shatabdi Express provides a good connectivity between the delta districts and the western districts of Tamil Nadu. Most of the time, this train reaches Tiruchirappalli junction much ahead of the scheduled time. This train should be extended to Mayiladuturai and this will benefit passengers from Chidambaram and Mayiladuturai. Also, there is a paddy research station at Aduturai which comes under the administration of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. If the train halts at Aduturai, it will help in linking these two centres. Ravi S, Saibaba Colony. Extend bus service to WalayarBus route no 3D from Ganapathy to Madukkarai is a much-patronised route as it serves the needs of commuters travelling to Gandhipuram, Ukkadam and beyond. To make it more route-friendly, it should be extended right up to Walayar, like bus route no 96, so that it can also cater to people going to Kerala. D. Balakrishnan, Ganapathy. Provide relief for senior citizensWith the introduction of the unit area system of property tax in Delhi since 2004 the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is offering a 30 per cent rebate in the gross property tax to citizens above 60. In the context of the Coimbatore Corporation authorities exploring ways to make the budget a vision statement for the city, the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation also may follow the Delhi example in the ensuing budget.
M.K. Nagaratnam, Trichy Road. Road work not yet completedTarring work from TWAD water tank on Argus Vilankurichi Road to Avinashi Road junction is not yet completed. The work between the TWAD tank and the AirTel office has been completed and that in the portion between the railway gate on this road and the Avinashi Road junction is over. But tarring between the dangerous ‘S’ bend and the railway gate on Thanneer Pandal Road is not yet completed. The stretch is fully damaged and is unfit for use. N.R. Ravisankar, Vilankurichi. Health Ministry lacks visionHealth Ministry lacks vision and ability to implement programmes. World Bank which has committed itself to programmes worth $ 14 million has reported serious instances of fraud and corruption in health projects. Sometime ago it was reported that the former president of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had halted all contracts on funds sanctioned by it owing to major fraudulent procedures in the contracts. K.K. Lakshmanan, Coimbatore. Tirupur’s needsTirupur’s residents feel elated and proud that the knitwear town has been elevated as a Corporation and has become the headquarters of a district to be merged with it. Now Tirupur railway station should be made a railway junction. The proposal in the Thirties to link Mysore and Palani with a rail line via Tirupur, which has been in cold storage, should be revived considering that lakhs of people visit the town. Scheme for water supply from Bhavani should be expedited. A master plan should be drawn up for provision of infrastructure to make it a city worth living in. M.R. Pillai, Rupa Nagar. Rise in auto LPG pricesAuto LPG price, which does not come under administered prices like those of petrol and diesel, has risen by 46.7 per cent in the last three months in Coimbatore. The prices for a litre are as follows: on 16.10.07 Rs. 24.45; on 21.10.07 Rs. 27.77; on 15.11.07 Rs. 29.36; on 22.12.07 Rs. 32.71 and on 2.01.08 Rs. 35.72. This amounts to a hike of Rs. 11.27 a litre in less than 80 days. Now auto LPG is on a par with diesel. With the Government of India promoting LPG as a green fuel and many automobile manufacturers coming out with LPG-fuelled cars, there will be shortage of auto LPG. Sunil Philip.S, Podanur. Teachers’ roleParental pressure and high expectations put students in a spot. In such a situation, teachers should become students’ friend, philosopher and guide. I endorse the views of Jayanthasri Balakrishnan that every teacher should be a counsellor. Counselling will help students to perform better with confidence and bring out their hidden skill and creative talents. It will also give them an opportunity to learn the values of life. B. Sripada Rajan, NGGO Colony. Reduce fare in air busKudos to the Tamil Nadu Government for introducing air bus in Coimbatore city. Travel in the air bus is comfortable. However, the fare is slightly on the higher side. I request the authorities concerned to reduce the fare. R. Ragavan, Nalvar Nagar.
