TIRUCHI: Ancient epics and literature in Tamil were a storehouse of values, virtues and above all scientific principles. The literary content of these epics have been handed over from generation to generation and efforts were needed to expose the scientific and technological facets enunciated in these great works such as Kamba Raamayanam, said the former Minister and the president of Kamban Kazhagam, Chennai, R. M. Veerappan.
He was speaking at a function to mark the inaugural of the Kamban Kazhagam and also the Kamban Vizha at Shrimati Indira Gandhi College of Arts and Science for Women here on Saturday.
Quoting verses from Kamba Ramayanam, Mr. Veerappan said that the poet’s work was a great contribution to not only social and political development but also intellectual growth of human race.
The fact that an atom was divisible with scientific names for the sub-particles had also been mentioned in another verse of the Kamba Raamayanam. “We have miserably failed to expose these scientific truths to the youths,” he said calling upon the women students who were present on the occasion to explore the scientific principles enunciated centuries ago in the Kamba Raamayanam.
The function also marked the felicitation to Principal of the College K. Meena in recognition of her services for the society. Mr. Veerappan commended the efforts taken by Ms. Meena for achieving state and national awards and also her love for Tamil language. “College students should shun their reservations in neglecting Tamil language and instead emulate her example,” he said.
The secretary of the Kamban Kazhagam, Rasipuram, S. Krishnamoorthy; noted Tamil scholars So. Sathyaseelan were among those who spoke.
