Poultry farmers in doldrums
Special Correspondent
Nearly four crore eggs have piled up in the godowns of 750 farms
NAMAKKAL: Facing yet another crisis in just three years, farmers of Namakkal are a worried lot, with their eggs piling up at the backyards of their farms.
Major buyers, including Dubai, Kuwait and Oman, have re-imposed the ban on poultry import from India and Namakkal after the outbreak of avian influenza in West Bengal.
A highly sanitised zone located some 1,000 km away from West Bengal, Namakkal is the worst hit, though its birds are healthy and robust, with no symptom of any viral attack so far.
Almost all the consignments of eggs and meat that left Namakkal a week ago have been detained at various ports.
Nearly four crore eggs have piled up in the godowns of 750 farms. Namakkal produces an average of 2.5 crore eggs a day, of which 70 lakh goes to Kerala daily.
The export, as eggs and powder, accounts for 55 lakh units a day. The rest is sent to the local market.
The poor shelf-life of eggs (40 days) worries the farmers. “Unless the containers at various ports are lifted in time, we will incur heavy losses,” says a leading exporter.
Slump in export
The export has slumped by 25 per cent in just three days. The meat in-take has fallen by 20 per cent.
