‘Feminism does not try to subjugate men; it is a concept crafted for mutual support’ Beauty pageants are mere brand ambassadors of international cosmetic companies, says Gopinath
DANCING DAMSELS: Students of Holy Cross College strike a pose at ‘Talentia – 08’ in Tiruchi on Saturday. TIRUCHI: It’s official, girls. The next time a guy stares at you, do not get offended. “Blame it on his genes,” said anchor Gopinath. Since the nascent stages of human evolution, men had to resist flickering their eyelids to focus during hunting. Hence, the predilection. TopicsThough his penchant for speaking on esoteric topics is known, Gopinath did not try to raise the pitch of the debate at the festooned campus of Holy Cross College, where an excited gathering of young people were present to hear him. Completely at ease amid a frenzied crowd, his sense of humour went several notches high at the inter-collegiate event, Talentia ’08, on Saturday, much to the delight of his audience. SkillsFor a person whose moderating skills in his talk show ‘Neeya Nana’ are a rage, he peppered his speech with humour and realism, demonstrating his capacity to keen people interested in the subject at hand. “Feminism is not something that tries to subjugate men. It’s a concept crafted to voice for mutual support.” Endorsement was phenomenal, if one went by the resounding cheers from the girls. His talk on the increasing fad for cosmetic beauty created quite a stir. “Beauty pageants are mere brand ambassadors of international cosmetic companies. India is seen as a potential dumping yard to market their products,” he said. Women must be perceived beyond beauty statement. Their intellectual capabilities must be encouraged and recognised. “Women have inherent multi-tasking capacity. Their administrative aptitude is matchless. “It’s in their hands to analyse their strength and work on it.” A couple of students threw some questions on his career challenges, to find out what exactly he had in mind. He distributed prizes to winners of the cultural competition. College secretary Sr. Jeusin Francis and Principal Sr. Sarguna Mary were present at the function. About 1,000 students took part in indoor and outdoor events. Fourteen indoor events, including painting, flower arrangement, collage, mehndi, rangoli, and seven outdoor competitions categorised under theatre, music and dance were held.
