“Bifurcate School Education Department”

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Headmasters Association, Vellore education district has urged the State government to bifurcate the School Education Department into two units, with separate directorates, one for high school education (for classes 6 to 10) and another for higher secondary education (classes XI and XII) to improve the standard of education in the schools.

This resolution was passed at the high-level zonal consultation meeting of the association held under the presidentship of Murugu. Arjunan, president of the Vellore education district branch and N. Karunanidhi, president of the Tirupattur education district branch of the association here on Saturday. It was pointed out that under the present system, though the postgraduate teachers were supposed to take classes for lower classes as well, they concentrated only on the XI and XII standards to ensure the good performance of the higher secondary students. In the process, interests of the students in classes nine and ten were neglected. Hence the need for bifurcation of the school education department and the higher secondary schools into two units, one for high schools (up to the 10th standard) and another for higher secondary schools (11th and 12th standards), with separate directorates at the State-level and separate headmasters for the high school unit and the higher secondary unit at the school level.
