CHAMPIONS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT: Participants of the 86th and 87th All India Championship Dog Shows in Bangalore on Sunday.

Bangalore: From the largest of the Great Danes to the smallest of Pugs, in all shapes, sizes and colours (one Pomeranian was in a pink ballet outfit), were all there vying with one another for honours at the 86th and 87th All India Championship Dog Shows in Bangalore on Sunday.

The championships, organised by the Mysore Kennel Club saw more than 450 canine contestants of 52 breeds. The third national show of Great Dane Club of India was also held at the same venue with over 80 Great Danes participating. These championship shows, according to a press release, were organised to commemorate the platinum jubilee of the club and the golden jubilee of the Veterinary College, Bangalore.

The weather in Bangalore has not been kind enough for Oscar, a one-and-a-half-year-old Pug from Thailand. “He needs to be in cool environs and has an air conditioned kennel. He also cannot eat local food; he used to be on scientific diet but now he eats food manufactured by an international dog feed company,” says Keerthana, owner of this miniature royalty.

Saritha, a software engineer, was there with her pet Nemo, a two-year-old St. Bernard. When asked if Nemo, a vegetarian, has problems adjusting to the climate here, she said: “Not at all. He is very friendly and well-adjusted.”

Payal Raj had dressed her six-year-old Pomeranian Ashy in a pink ballet dress. She said: “I am here just to see the events.” Several rare breeds, including Miniature Schnauzer, Neapolitan Mastiff, St. Bernard, Wirehaired Dachshund, Weimaraner, Fox Terrier, Fox Hound, German Wirehaired Pointer, Silky Terrier, Collie, Pekingese, Saluki and Shih Tzus, were among the participants.

The dogs were competing for the Best of Breed, Best in Group and the Best in Show honours, and in all, 16 awards for 86th and 87th championships.
