‘It’s become hard for us’

People anxious as work on underpass is delayed

Many residents have been confined to their houses

‘We’ll have to make sacrifices for the greater good’

BANGALORE: The underpass work at Cauvery Junction has taken its toll on people living in the vicinity, especially residents of Sadashivanagar. Even as the deadline for the completion of the work has been extended by another 10 days, anxiety among the residents over the water supply has increased with many already facing water shortages.

Apart from the fact that most of them have been confined to their houses, many have complained of recurring problems with the water supply.

Kailash Raj, a Sadashivanagar resident, who has been forced to buy water for the last four days, seemed annoyed by the delay in work and the lack of planning and foresight.

He said: “It has been really hard for us. I am buying water by paying private water suppliers Rs. 250 daily.”

Further, he said while many rich families, which have sunk borewells, may not be feeling the heat, the project has hit the poor and middle-class families living in the area hard.

“They should have planned it better and not given us false hopes about the project ending in three days,” he added.

Other residents too seemed perturbed about the situation in the area, particularly the restriction imposed on the movement of people that might disturb the work. A resident of Orchard apartments, who gave her name as Ms. Nagpal said that she was unable to get out of her house since the work started.

But she seemed to console herself by saying that some sacrifices had to be made for the greater good.

Telephone lines

Apart from disruption in regular water and power supply, residents of neighbouring Vyalikaval, R.T. Nagar, Gangenahalli, Jayamahal, Palace Guttahalli, Sadashivnagar and surrounding areas also had to put up with disruption in telephone connections.

A top official, who admitted that several optic fibre cables of telecom companies, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited were damaged during excavation, said the BBMP had given the service providers enough time to prepare for such problems.

Traffic snarls

Traffic continued to pile up at the Cauvery Junction and on all connecting roads in Malleswaram, Vyalikaval and Sadashivnagar even on Sunday.

“Though the traffic flow is usually not heavy on Sundays, movement of vehicles has been chaotic today because of the work and resultant diversions,” a policeman manning traffic at the junction said.
