Workshop on preserving scientific heritage from today

Bangalore: The premier science institutes of India, many of which were established in the colonial period, have over the decades gone through radical transformations, reached important milestones and nurtured scientists who went on to become global legends.

And as these institutions grow older, preserving their legacies becomes critical.

To emphasise the importance of archiving scientific material, three of the country’s top science institutes – the 220 year-old Indian Institute of Astrophysics, the 100-year-old Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the 63-year-old Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) – have organised a national workshop on “Preserving our scientific heritage”.

The workshop aims to provide librarians and archivists with a framework and guidelines to help them set up an archive within their organisation.

The workshop will focus on the following areas: Collection of heritage material; conservation procedures; factors causing deterioration; preventive and curative conservation; acidity management; storage specifications; environmental factors; disaster management; preservation of hand-written manuscripts; and copyright issues.

The two-day workshop will be inaugurated on January 21 at 9 a.m., at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.

The keynote speaker, Ross Bassett, a historian of technology at the North Carolina University, will be speaking on “Archives: A Historian’s View”.

The other speakers will include Atri Mukhopadhyay, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics; Indira Chowdhury, TIFR Archives; and V. Jeyaraj, Madras Museum and Archives. For further details, visit: www.iiap.res.in/archives.
