Grand celebration marks festival

The 22nd annual day and parents day was celebrated in a grand manner at Brilliant Matriculation School at Muthupettai in Tiruvarur district recently.

N. Saratha, Inspector of Matriculation Schools, Thanjavur, presided over the function and distributed prizes to the students.

A. Muhammed Yakub, Correspondent and Principal of the school and M. Meera Hussain, president of Parent Teachers Association participated.

Saratha also presented a gold medal to H. Mohammed Tharik, who obtained first place in the district and first mark in the school (1036 out of 1100) in the public examination in 2006-2007.

Mementoes were given to R. Asvin, and Sriram Kumar, who obtained second and third marks in the public examination.

A memento was also awarded to Mohammed Tharik for having secured 200 out of 200 in Maths in the public examination. One more special memento was awarded to G. Mahaganapathy, maths teacher of the school for achieving the first place in maths by the student. Cultural programmes were performed by the students.

Memorial day

The 42nd memorial day of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadhur Sastri was observed at Al Ameen Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam.

School Correspondent M. Kamaludeen presided over the function and spoke on Sastri’s political contribution to nation building.

Principal S. Syed Abdul Subahan narrated the life of Sastri.

A few students got on to stage and spoke on his dedication.

Teachers, parents and students took part in the function and paid floral tributes to the portrait of Sastri.

Students felicitated

Four students from Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, who participated in the Second National Level Scouts Jamboree, New Delhi, were felicitated.

Chief Educational Officer S. Chellam congratulated them.

The participants – R. Prasanna, R. Uthrakeerthan, M. Aravindan and C. Dinesh – took part in the seven-day event, which witnessed enthusiastic activities such as commando crossing, tiger jump, Russian wall, electronics, puzzle corner, poster making, para sailing, night hike, swimming activities and rock climbing.

The District Scouts and Guides Coordinator S. Gunaseelan, School Principal S. Ravikumar and school scout coordinator G. Mohan were present at the felicitation function.

The students were also congratulated by School Correspondent Jayabarathan Chelliah and Senior Principal Jonathan J.

Bring laurels to their school

Silverstar of St. Michael’s High School, Madhakottai, Thanjavur district, won silver in the high jump event in the below 17 years category at the Republic Day athletic meet held at Karur recently.

He cleared a distance of 1.78 meters to win the coveted silver.

Earlier, he had won gold at the Thanjavur divisional-level meet with a new record.

The CEO, Radhakrishnan, and the DEO, Ramanathan, commended Silverstar and also the Headmater of the school, Rev. Fr. Sebastian, and the Physical Education Teacher Suresh Kumar, who provided encouragement to him.

Pongal and New Year festival

The Rotary Club of Pudukottai celebrated the New Year and Pongal festival at a function held at P. S. J. School premises. Various competitions, including vocal contest, were held for the students and the Pudukottai RDO, T. Mohan and Pattukottai RDO, Kalaiselvi, distributed prizes to the winners.

The Vice-Chairman of the Pudukottai Municipality K. Naina Mohamed delivered special speech on the importance of Pongal.

The president of the Rotary Club, M. Srinivasan, its secretary, M. S. Saravanan and others spoke.

Pep talk given to students

Students of Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, experienced a different kind of class when they were addressed by A. Aysha Parveen, a dietitian attached to Team Speciality Hospital.

The Senior Principal of the school, Jonathan. J, in his introductory remarks, said that sometimes even hardworking students were not able to do well academically due to their failure to take proper diet.

Low haemoglobin count hampered the progress of a student. Ms. Aysha, an old student of the school, stressed that health is not just absence of disease but complete physical, mental and social well-being.

She briefed the students on their nutritional requirements, sources of different nutrients and the effects of over-nutrition and under-nutrition. The students were given dietary guidelines and sample menus and also tips on relaxation techniques to help them relax and study with concentration.

The Correspondent, Jayabarathan, presided over the function.

Free uniforms distributed

Distribution of free uniforms to students belonging to the economically weaker sections marked the highlight of the ‘Pongal’ festival celebrations at the Government Higher Secondary School in Marundathalai near Annavasal in Pudukottai district recently.

Teachers and the Headmaster of the school, Susai, not only identified the students hailing from economically backward families but also donated the uniforms to them to make the students cheerful on the festival day.

Mr. Susai gave away the uniforms to the students.

Special training programme

A three-day special training programme for the differentlyabled children was conducted under the ‘Sarva Siksha Abhiyan’ (Education for All) programme at the Block Resource Centre in Tirumayam, near Pudukottai recently.

About 130 students of Classes VI, VII and VIII from 30 schools underwent the training that included several lecture sessions on various topics, including time management, personality development, stress management and selection of career goals.

The Assistant Elementary Educational Officer Krishnan inaugurated the training and outlined the meticulous efforts taken by the experts in designing the sessions.
