Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: The ninth district congress of Communist Party of India (Marxist) is being held here on January 22 and 23. The meet would review the party’s programmes in the district for the last three years and finalise the agenda for the next three years.

A massive 1,720 km padayatra covering 655 villages in 56 days, from December 10, 2005 to February 3, 2006, taken up by seven leaders of the party led by its district secretary G. Obulakonda Reddy for enlightening people to build pressure on the Government for comprehensive development of the district has been the highlight of the party’s programme since its last congress in January 2005.

Agitations

Apart from hearing the problems of people en route the long march, the exercise has also helped the party to strengthen its base in the villages. Agitations on behalf of sericulture, dairy and medicinal plants have also taken the party further closer to the farming community.

The party has also held awareness meetings in all the 63 mandals on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) explaining to the people that it was meant for the benefit of farm labourers to ensure wage employment during the lean period.
