New lease of life: Migrant tribal child workers rescued by UNICEF at the National Child Labour Prevention programme-run special school at Undiyalanatham, near Krishnagiri, on Monday.

Krishnagiri: As many as 40 migrant tribal child workers who had moved along with their families to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh were tracked by the volunteers of Child Friendly Village Planning (CFVP) at Undiyalnatham Irular colony in Veppanapalli panchayat near here.

A majority of the children lacked access to primary education and were constantly on the move due to lack of permanent houses and to sustain their livelihood.

The families recently visited their village in the district to participate in the annual Keeraiamman festival.

Volunteers of CFVP informed UNICEF, which visited the area and arranged for their temporary accommodation in the village for the next three days.

As part of the back-to-school initiative, Collector Santhosh Babu directed officials concerned to immediately construct 26 group houses for the migrant tribal families and also a special school under the National Child Labour Prevention programme.

Teachers appointed

The authorities also appointed two teachers for the special school.

The district administration would extend necessary assistance to the families by dovetailing from various Government schemes such as old age pension, widow pension and physically handicapped pension.

The implementation of Activity Based Learning methodology in the special school would help these children learn at their own pace and attain the required competencies, say sources.
