HOSPET (BELLARY): The former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash has taken exception to the reported statements of leaders from Maharashtra with regard to the award of classical status to Kannada. They had reportedly said that the language did not meet the required criteria for award of classical status at a literary conference held in Sangli recently. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Prakash said the Kannada language, after Tamil, met all criteria for eligibility for classical status. He termed the approach of the leaders from Maharashtra as devoid of reason and asked them to desist from making statements that hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas. Mr. Prakash, referring to what he termed continued injustice being meted out to Kannadigas with regard to railway recruitment, urged the Railway Minister to bring in suitable amendments to the recruitment rules, so as to ensure that the local people were employed in Group-C and Group-D categories of jobs. Amendments“Such an amendment is necessary in the wake of continued feelings of neglect among the people of the State,” he said. CommitteeMr. Prakash was also in favour of forming a non-official committee to oversee recruitment in the Railways and other public sector undertakings. He was here to participate in a function to set in motion the idol installation at the Jain temple.
