VAO suspended

NAMAKKAL: Collector G. Sundaramurthi placed a village administrative officer (VAO) under suspension for allegedly demanding money from a person for selecting her as a beneficiary under the marriage assistance scheme.

A press release said that the Collector ordered an inquiry following complaints that the VAO of Vadakarai Attur Melmugam village, Sivagnanam, demanded money for selection of beneficiaries.

During inquiry, it was found that the official accepted Rs. 1,300 from Vimala for selecting her under the scheme. The VAO was suspended.

The Collector cautioned that the district administration would initiate stern action against the officials, if they were found committing irregularities or causing unnecessary delays in implementing welfare schemes.

People could complaint to the Collector in phone number 94441-63000 if Government officials demanded money, the release added.
