ARANTHANGI: The sub-registrar’s office at Subramaniapuram near here, which was closed on economic grounds from July 1, 2003, has been re-opened.

In all, a total of 47 offices of sub-registrar in parts of the State were wound up during the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) regime and were merged with the adjoining sub-registrars’ offices.

The State Government has recently ordered restoration of 17 offices, including the one at Subramaniapuram village.

Speaking at a function to mark the re-opening of the sub-registrar’s office, the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathi said that five sub-registrar’s offices at Ullikottai, Pappanadu, Nachiyarkovil, Subramaniapuram and Irandam Pulikadu had been re-opened so far. Steps were being taken to restore the balance 10 offices in parts of the State. Mr. Regupathi also assured the farmers that adequate compensation would be given to the paddy-growers, who had incurred heavy loss in the wake of the blast disease on the ‘Andhra Ponni’ variety on about 5,000 acres in and around Embal.

The district administration had already initiated action in this regard, he said.

The Collector D. Uthirakkumaran said that the status quo of jurisdiction over 56 villages under the sub-registrars’ office at Subramniapuram would be maintained, covering 32 villages in Aranthangi taluk, 11 in Peravurani taluk, six in Manamelkudi taluk and seven in Keeramangalam taluk.

The DIG of Registration K. Sankaranayanan and the District Registrar, Pattukottai, K. Shanmugasundaram, were among those who spoke.
