INSPECTING QUALITY: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development and Puducherry Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan at the Education Department’s Central Kitchen at Kuruchikuppam on Monday. PUDUCHERRY: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resource Development on Monday visited various Government schools to study the implementation of the mid day meal scheme, Rajiv Gandhi Breakfast scheme and the Sarva Siksha Abiyan. The committee comprising 14 members from Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha visited the Education Department’s Central Kitchen at Kuruchikuppam and Mettupalayam and saw the way in which food was being prepared for the noon meal for Government school students. Education Minister M.O.H. F. Shahjahan also took them to the Vallalar Government School to study the distribution of milk under the breakfast scheme. To study the implementation of the SSA, they visited two schools Government Primary School, Vanarapet and Government Primary School, Thattanchavady. Annual grantOfficials of the department explained that under the SSA each school was being provided an annual grant of Rs. 5,000 towards maintenance and repairs. Schools were also given a grant of Rs. 2,000 as equipment grant and Rs. 500 per teacher for teaching learning materials. Schools were also provided with Rs 15,000 to improve drinking water facilities, Rs 20,000 for improvement of toilet facilities and Rs 2 lakh for construction of additional classrooms to each school. A total of Rs 13 crore was spent during 2006-07 and Rs 8.73 crore was being spent during the current year 2007-08.
