Work on upgrading PHC begins

NAMAKKAL: The upgrading of Manickampalayam primary health centre (PHC) into a 24-hour facility has begun recently.
The Central Government has allotted Rs. 55 lakh for developing the centre under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
New buildings
The Health Department has taken up construction of new buildings for the centre.
An operation theatre, laboratory and consultation rooms would be established in the new buildings.
The bed capacity would be increased to 30.
Modern facilities
The centre would be equipped with modern facilities including ultra scan, echocardiogram and surgical instruments to provide quality healthcare service to the people.
The department will appoint five more doctors, including a gynaecologist, anaesthetist and a surgeon.
More than one lakh people from various villages located near the centre would be able to access modern healthcare facilities after upgradation, officials said.
The department had already upgraded eight PHCs in the district into 24-hour centres.
Further, it had submitted proposals to the Union Government seeking funds to upgrade the PHCs in Kabilamalai, Pilla Nallur and Mallasamudram under NRHM.
The government is likely to sanction funds for these PHCs in the next fiscal, officials said.
The district has a total of 47 PHCs.
Deputy Speaker of the Assembly V.P. Duraisamy inaugurated the construction of new buildings at a function held at Manickampalayam recently.
Senior officials were present.
