Kasaragod: Incidents of arson and violence were reported from Bovikkanam, near here, where a sawmill and a bike were torched in continuing clash between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) activists on Monday. Ten persons were injured and seven persons arrested in connection with the incidents. According to the police, incidents of arson and violence continued as a group of people set ablaze a sawmill and a motorbike and targeted an oil mill, hotel, motorbike and a telephone booth owned by rival political party workers early Monday, prompting the police to rush additional forces. The IUML workers obstructed road traffic, demanding action against the perpetrators of violence and arson even as seven persons were arrested in connection with the incident. The clash which began on Sunday was a sequel to the reported disappearance of a flag of the Swatantra Thozhilali Union, trade union wing of the IUML, on Saturday. The IUML blamed the BJP for the incident, leading to sporadic clashes between the two party activists. Traders in the town downed their shutters on Monday in protest against the incident. The police said the situation in the town was normal. — PTI
