Broiler chicken is Rs. 25 a kg

M. Gunasekaran

TIRUPUR: The farm gate price of broiler chicken has touched a low of Rs. 25 a kg from Rs. 34 a kg a couple of days back, on Monday because of panic sales. The Palladam-based Broiler Coordination Committee chairman R. Lakshmanan maintained that consumption of broiler chicken had not been affected drastically.

Mr. Lakshmanan told The Hindu that the poultry units had been forced to sell their produce as they feared further dip in prices. The poultry units, with the help of Animal Husbandry department, have been taking precautionary efforts to prevent the outbreak of bird flu.

“We are using disinfectants every day. Unknown persons are barred from entering farms. Movement of people is restricted in the farms,” he explained.

The vehicles, which carry the birds, are cleaned before every trip made, he added.
