FRAYED TEMPERS: CPI leaders arguing with a municipal official during the ‘Maha dharna’ in Kurnool on Monday.

KURNOOL: The Communist Party of India organised a ‘Maha dharna’ here on Monday demanding comprehensive development of the city. The party demanded Rs. 500 crore for an all-round development of the city.

The CPI State committee member P. Bhimlingappa, party district secretary K. Ramanjaneyulu and Raithu Sangham secretary K. Jagannatham took part in the dharna along with city secretary S. N. Rasool and party activists. The protesters stormed the municipal office and raised slogans.

The leaders said the Chief Minister who laid foundation for the underground drainage at Kadapa did not demonstrate a similar enthusiasm in developing other cities of the State. Kurnool city was the most neglected one in the entire State, they said.

Civic body flayed

They accused the Municipal Council led by the Congress party of failing on all fronts in undertaking development.

The ruling party helped the middlemen make money out of Indiramma housing scheme and also allowed the realtors to grab Government land.

On the other hand, the Government turned intolerant towards those who agitated for house sites.

The leaders accused the government of failing to keep its promise of sanctioning low-cost loans to women groups and filling up of vacancies in government offices.

They threatened to intensify the agitation if the government did not announce a package for development of the city soon.
