ALAPPUZHA: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved the proposal for a field station of the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, to be located at Alappuzha. Alappuzha MP K.S. Manoj, addressing a press conference here on Monday, said P.S. Nayyar, Under Secretary to the Government of India, had written to the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and to the Director of NIV, Pune, approving the proposal and directing that steps to start the unit be completed before March 31, 2008. The project, estimated to cost Rs.20.64 crore, would come up on a five-acre site near the T.D. Medical College, Vandanam, near here.
