Well done, India

Congratulations to the Indian cricket team on winning the third Test match against Australia in Perth. The victory is all the more significant because it was achieved in the face of many adversities. The Sydney Test and its aftermath must have surely taken a toll on the Indian skipper and his men. Also, the fact that the third Test was being played at a pitch reputed to be the fastest must have weighed heavily on their minds. The Indian batting was expected to crumble before the Aussies’ pace battery. But as things unfolded, it became obvious that Indians were made of sterner stuff. They displayed nerves of steel to vanquish the hosts. Anil Kumble, who was a picture of determination, emerged the true hero.

Indian cricketers bounced back in style at Perth after the Sydney Test debacle. One hopes Kumble and his men will play the fourth and final Test at Adelaide with the same spirit and square the series.

The triumph at Perth was no flash in the pan. Our boys exposed the weakness in the batting prowess of the Aussies even in Sydney, where minus Steve Bucknor we would have won hands down. They demonstrated their batting skills, ignoring the media hype over the fast pitch and the fiery bowling by the Australians.

Full marks to Anil Kumble for his brave decision to bat first! Significantly, the match was not a one-man show but a team work by Indians. We hope Team India will carry the good work from here to Adelaide.

Victory at Perth was truly historic because it came against many odds. When the row over the suspension of Harbhajan Singh erupted, Indians were not even sure whether the series was on. After what happened in Sydney, anyone would have cracked. But Kumble stood firm. The fighter that he is, he lifted the team from the dumps more easily than many others would have perhaps done.

Kumble’s post-Sydney Test comment that only one team played with the spirit of the game seems to have worked wonders. The Australian team lost its aggression. The withdrawal of complaint against Brad Hogg showed Team India’s magnanimity. As a result of this gesture, India won the Test even before it began.

Hats off to Kumble and his team for their hard earned win over Australia! At the same time, I wish to remind everyone that cricket is nothing more than a game. If our team wins, taking the cricketers to dizzy heights and dropping them when they lose should not become a habit. If we treat cricket as just a game, and cricketers as mortals, we will be able to accept victory and defeat with equanimity.

India’s win proves that with focus, determination, well-planned strategy and teamwork, nothing is impossible to achieve. It was the same team that faced accusations of racism, had a tough time at Sydney, and was almost ready to return home. Team India played well and restored the spirit of the gentleman’s game.

It is a great victory for Kumble’s Team India. The first Test was won by Australia, the second by the umpires, and the third by India.
