News Analysis
The U.K. Home Secretary in 1988 was Douglas Hurd. It was wrongly mentioned as Douglas Bird in the column Online and Off Line (Op-Ed Page, January 21, 2008). A snippet on the ‘Newscape’ page top (January 21, 2008), “Controversial play condemned” did not say where this happened. It was in Sydney, Australia. “Poultry farmers in doldrums” (Tamil Nadu, January 21, 2008) says, “Major buyers, including Dubai, Kuwait and Oman have reimposed the ban on poultry import from India and Namakkal…” Is Namakkal not in India, a reader asks. A sentence in “U.K., Russia row over British Council” (International, January 18, 2008) read: “Mr. Miliband said the Russian Government had insisted that the work of the British Council was completely legal….” It should have read, “Mr. Miliband insisted that …” Smelting is extraction of metal from its ore. The process of recovering lead from discarded batteries involves melting the plates. `Smelting’ was wrongly used in the heading and text of a report, “Lead smelting operations a cause of concern” (Page 4, Delhi, January 21, 2008). In “Sharapova meets Henin next” (Sport, January 21, 2008), Lleyton Hewitt won the third set 7-5 and not lost 5-7 as it has appeared in the text. It was an editing error.
