Market will grow in orderly manner: PM
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday sought to allay investor apprehensions over the state of the country’s economy in the wake of the sharp slump in the bourses. At a joint press conference here with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Dr. Singh said: “Considering that the fundamentals of our economy are elementarily strong, I am confident [that the] market will grow in an orderly manner. I would like to assure the Indian public that sustained orderly growth for capital markets is a priority concern for our government.”
On the specific reasons for the Sensex plummeting 1408.35 points, Dr. Singh said, “Fluctuations are part of the market forces, and I will not comment on that.”
Mr. Brown said, “The global financial turbulence is affecting all markets. We are determined to maintain the stability of our economies.”
