Singapore reassures IOC

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: Singapore on Monday pledged to ensure that the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010, if awarded to this City State, “will be an event the world will be proud of.”

Singapore figures in the final short-list of two cities, the other being Moscow, for voting by the members of the International Olympic Committee. Delighted at this development, Singapore’s leaders, closely associated with its bid to host the prestigious Games, responded with gilt-edged reassurances. Defence Minister and President of Singapore Olympic Council, Teo Chee Hean, said the City-State “offers a safe and secure environment for the 5,000 athletes and officials” expected to participate in the first-ever Youth Olympics.
