CHENNAI: A son of the soil was felicitated for his role in greening a Chattisgarh township by Exnora International here on Monday. Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin handed over the ‘Corporate Green Responsibility Award’ to Bhilai Steel Plant Managing Director R. Ramaraju. He lauded the fact that Mr. Ramaraju from Tiruchi had enabled the planting of 52 lakh trees in Bhilai Nagar. Bhilai Steel Plant, one of the Navaratna Public Sector Units, supplies the steel rails used by the Indian Railways to lay railway tracks. The organisation was feted for exemplary waste management and natural resource development practices in the citation of the award. Tamil Nadu Government Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy handed over the Prakriti Ratna Award lauding Mr. Ramaraju’s role in the implementation of these practices. Mr. Stalin said that the Bhilai Steel Plant factory premises had seven gardens and that more than 32 acres of township land were being maintained with greenery. Eco clubs had been set up in the several schools that function in the township. Mr. Tripathy said that the Tamil Nadu Government had also started to green various parts of the State, including urban areas, by planting trees. Such programmes were important as global warming reduces food crop production, among causing other ill effects. M.B. Nirmal, founder, Exnora International; S. Appaswamy, chairman, Appaswamy Real Estate; “TV” Varadarajen, M. Murali, Managing Director, Krishna Sweets; K. Padmanabhan of Jayadhaarini Trust; and Sulochana Ramaseshan, president, Exnora International; spoke.
