shocking fall: The CSI Primary School in Vandalur, where the sunshade collapsed on Monday. —
TAMBARAM: The sunshade of a building housing a government-aided primary school in Vandalur collapsed on Monday morning. However, no one was hurt.
All 185 students were attending classes when the incident took place. The sunshade above the ground floor classrooms collapsed all of a sudden around 10.30 a.m, some 10 minutes ahead of the morning break.
Shock waves
The incident sent shock waves around the locality as anxious parents flocked the school premises when they heard the news. The CSI Primary School, a government-aided institution on Vembuli Amman Koil Street, was established in 1894 and provides free education to children from the Vandalur and Otteri areas for classes from I and V Standards.
The old classrooms were demolished to make way for new and construction work for additional rooms above the ground floor is currently on, officials of the Elementary Education Wing of Kattankulathur Panchayat Union told reporters.
Parents said a thorough safety audit of the school buildings should be made.
