New sub-division for Perambalur likely

Staff Reporter

Proposal for two new police stations made

Move aimed at improving policing

PERAMBALUR: A new sub-division at Mangalamedu, covering the proposed special economic zone, and two new police stations at Veppanthattai and Agaramsigur are likely to be created in Perambalur district soon.

District police officials forwarded the proposals , aimed at improving policing, to headquarters last week.

Following the bifurcation of Perambalur and the creation of Ariyalur district a couple of months ago, the number of police stations in the district was reduced to eight, all falling under the single Perambalur sub-division.

A new police station at Veppanthattai, a thickly populated area, has been proposed as it was a taluk headquarters. In the case of Agaramsigur, the setting up of a full-fledged station has been felt since the area is “crime-prone.” Also, this will be in keeping with a long-standing public demand.

At present, residents in and around Veppanthattai have to go to Arumbavur police station, about 15 km away, to lodge a complaint or submit a petition. Worse still for Agaramsigur residents who have to travel 25 km to lodge a complaint at the police station at Mangalamedu.

A temporary outpost-cum-check post was opened at Agaramsigur in March last following instances of crime. Six police personnel in three shifts are manning the outpost, checking vehicles coming from Thittakudi and other places in neighbouring Cuddalore district.

The opening of a temporary outpost has largely reduced crime at Agaramsigur, Superintendent of Police, Perambalur, Prem Anand Sinha told The Hindu on Saturday.

Mr. Sinha said proposals for setting up special units, including Crime Branch -CID, Special Branch-CID, ‘Q’ Branch, Armed Reserve, Social Justice and Human Rights and Special Branch, in Ariyalur district had been forwarded to headquarters.
