The story of Kuttanad

‘Kuttanadan Kayalnilangal,’ written by Joseph Mathew Vallickad, former head of the department of Botany at Mar Ivanios College, gives a comprehensive account of the regional history and the agricultural crisis of Kuttanad.

The 72-page book, released by Agriculture Production Commissioner K. Jayakumar in Thiruvananthapuram recently, is aptly dedicated to the farmers of the region who have become ‘victims of neglect and apathy.’

Hailing from an agricultural family in the region, the writer painfully reflects how with the changing times and political priorities the farmers of Kuttanad were forced to give up paddy cultivation. The book also suggests some solutions that would enable the farmers of Kuttanad to restore their lost glory.

Author George Onakkoor has written the introduction for the book. ‘Kuttanadan Kayalnilangal’ is published by Mini publications.
