The city Corporation’s campaign against the use of plastic seems to have had little effect on political parties and religious institutions which still prefer plastic boards, banners and festoons to publicise everything from the arrival of a national leader to a pilgrimage or a public meeting. Notwithstanding the campaign, the city is frequently swamped by plastic boards and festoons strung up in public places. The traffic islands at busy junctions virtually disappear under a sea of flags and boards. The broken festoons litter the streets and get entangled with the wheels of passing vehicles or trip up pedestrians. Once disengaged from the threads holding them in place, the plastic sheets drift a long distance across the road. Many of them end up clogging drains and gutters, forcing the Corporation to spend a huge sum on clearing the blocks. T. Nandakumar
