University departments in wi-fi world, at last

Wi-fi has finally set up shop on the campus of the University of Kerala at Karyavattom. With the Department of Geology and the Centre for Bioinformatics becoming fully wi-fi enabled, students here can log on to the Net from anywhere inside the department building from either their laptops or any other handheld device.

As is the usual practice around the world, access to this wi-fi environment is password-protected. Teachers in these university facilities say the main advantage of a wi-fi environment is that it frees the student from the confines of a laboratory or a classroom. It also frees the student from ‘regular’ class hours, allowing a large amount of flexibility in the manner in which s/he goes about completing projects or assignments.

The university as an academic unit, though, is yet to wake up to the possibilities of a wi-fi environment.
