PUDUCHERRY: Activists of the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) took out a rally here on Tuesday in support of demands such as trade union rights of the workers and extension of statutory benefits to them. Led by S. Balasubramanian and S. Motilal, president and general secretary respectively of the Puducherry unit of the AICCTU, a large number of workers including women took part in the procession taken out from the old bus stand. The activists staged a protest demonstration before the Chief Secretariat. They raised slogans and carried placards to highlight their demands. The workers had been facing uncertainty in view of an increasing trend among the private factory managements to refuse recognition to the trade unions, Mr. Motilal said. Workers had been subjected to retrenchment and ouster. A memorandum highlighting the plight of the workers and their demands was presented to the Secretary of the Industries Department.
